I have discovered that making vows in relation to the planets is the best way to ensure not straying from an intent.
Thinking about it in a way, its like monkey (representing the mind) wearing the head band, and Tripitaka has the power to say the chant that will make the headband tighten and cause monkey (mind) pain if he tries to go astray.
If you take vows with beings that mean business then it increases the gravity of the situation, and less likely to stray from it.
